President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Super Eagles for their spirited performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, despite their painful exit following a dramatic playoff loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

Nigeria’s World Cup hopes were dashed at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, where DR Congo advanced to the intercontinental playoffs after edging the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties. The match had ended 1–1 after 120 minutes of intense regulation and extra time.

Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria an early lead in the third minute, but DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute through M. Elia. Both sides created chances in extra time, with Tolu Arokodare missing a crucial header and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali producing a vital save from a dangerous free kick. However, neither team could find the winner, forcing the decisive penalty shootout.

The shootout saw early misses from Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon, while Nwabali denied DR Congo’s first attempt. Ultimately, the Congolese held their nerve to progress, condemning Nigeria to a second consecutive World Cup absence.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team for their effort and resilience.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must applaud the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” he said.

The President called on all stakeholders in Nigerian football to undertake a thorough review of the team’s performance, stressing the need to address the structural gaps affecting results.

“We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must return to the drawing board,” Tinubu stated.

He urged the nation to shift attention to the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to hold in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.

“Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” the President added, noting that lessons from the World Cup qualifiers should guide preparations for the continental challenge.

Tinubu also encouraged Nigerians to continue rallying behind the national team, commending their determination throughout both legs of the playoff and the pressure-packed shootout.
