The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing the immediate revitalization of the historic Apoje Farms in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, following a motion moved on Tuesday by the lawmaker representing Ijebu North I State Constituency, Hon. Rasheed Kashamu.
The resolution followed extensive deliberations on a motion titled “Need for the Revamp of Apoje Farms and Comprehensive Review of Farm Settlements Management in Ogun State.” The motion, sponsored by Hon. Kashamu, was seconded by the member representing Ikenne State Constituency, Hon. Olakunle Sobukanla, and subsequently adopted through a unanimous voice vote.
During his lead debate, Hon. Kashamu underscored the historic relevance and economic potential of Apoje Farms, describing it as “a once-thriving hub for oil palm, citrus, and other agricultural produce.” He argued that the farm’s rehabilitation would align with the state’s agricultural development agenda, enhance food production, stimulate rural employment, and boost the state’s internally generated revenue.
The state’s youngest lawmaker further recommended that Apoje Farms be integrated into the Ogun State Agricultural Master Plan. He proposed an expanded framework that would incorporate livestock production, aquaculture, agro-processing hubs, and agro-tourism, supported by a sustainable management model to ensure accountability and long-term productivity.
Several lawmakers spoke in support of the motion, including former Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo; Minority Leader Hon. Lukman Adeleye; and Honourables Oluseun Adesanya, Babatunde Tella, Haruna Egungbohun, Damilare Bello, and Adegoke Adeyanju. They emphasized the need for the state to revive its agricultural estates, recalling that agriculture was once a major revenue source for Ogun before the oil boom.
The lawmakers stressed that revamping Apoje Farms and other farm settlements was essential for tackling food scarcity and stabilizing the state’s economy. They also called for a comprehensive audit and overhaul of all government-owned agricultural estates to enhance transparency and operational efficiency.
The Assembly further raised concerns over alleged encroachment by real estate developers on government-acquired farmland. Members urged the executive to adopt urgent measures to halt the conversion of such lands into residential estates.
Following deliberations, Hon. Kashamu moved the motion for the adoption of the resolution, seconded by Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju. A separate motion by the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sherrif, seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Adeleye, formally converted the debate into a binding House resolution.
As part of the resolution, the Assembly summoned the Commissioner for Agriculture, Bolu Owotomo; the Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun; and the General Manager of the Agricultural Development Corporation to appear before the House on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. The officials are expected to brief lawmakers on the current status of Apoje Farms and present an actionable roadmap for its revitalization.
