Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed calls by factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Umar Turaki, SAN, for the intervention of United States President Donald Trump in Nigeria’s political affairs, insisting that the country’s democracy remains stable and secure.
Wike spoke on Wednesday when he received the board members of the South-South Development Commission, led by Chairman Chibudom Nwuche, on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.
Turaki had on Tuesday urged President Trump and leaders of other advanced democracies to “save Nigeria’s democracy,” following the clash between rival factions of the PDP at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
In his remarks to journalists, Turaki said: “I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not just a genocide against Nigerian Christians. He should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I am calling on all other developed nations, all advanced democracies, come and save Nigeria, come and save democracy.”
Responding, Wike described the comments as reckless and dangerous, saying they amounted to a threat to national security. He accused Turaki’s faction of acting with impunity by refusing to comply with subsisting court orders, and said the PDP’s internal crisis could not be blamed on the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“Look at a threat to national security. You are calling on Trump to come and save your democracy when you cannot obey a simple court judgment. Don’t do this until you have done that — a simple judgment,” Wike said.
“Now you are turning it around and blaming the government. What is their business? You cannot keep your house in order, yet you’re blaming outsiders. Who does that? Our democracy is not under threat.”
The former Rivers State Governor further criticised Turaki for claiming an ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria, arguing that such an allegation should have prompted immediate action from security agencies.
“You go on national television to allege genocide against Christians. In essence, you are telling the world that this government is carrying out genocide. And where are the security agencies?
“For someone to make such a statement, you won’t invite him to come and present facts? But if it is Wike, kill him!” he added.
