Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku completed his registration on Monday, days after informing ADC stakeholders and supporters in Adamawa of his decision to join the party.

The development was confirmed by Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to the former vice president, in an official statement. Videos and photographs from the event captured Atiku’s convoy arriving to a rousing welcome, as jubilant supporters beat drums, sang, and waved placards bearing his image.

Atiku acknowledged the cheering crowd, waving from his vehicle before receiving his ADC membership card.

Shortly after the registration, he posted a brief message on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “It’s official. – AA.”

The move formalises Atiku’s association with the coalition-driven party, which he openly endorsed in July as a unifying platform for opposition leaders, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to present a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and several other opposition figures had held off on officially registering with the ADC.

His entry into the party is expected to boost the ADC’s national profile and reinforce its positioning as a central coalition platform ahead of the next general election.
