Panic spread across Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday after the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, reportedly collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm, prompting an immediate emergency response from his aides and security personnel.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the deputy governor appeared to be in serious condition when he was transported to the hospital’s emergency unit.
While some medical sources said Ewhrudjakpo had been stabilised in the ICU, other unconfirmed reports speculated about his condition. As of press time, there was no official statement from the state government regarding his status or the cause of the medical emergency.
A source close to the deputy governor suggested exhaustion may have played a role, saying:
“He’s a workaholic; he really needs to find time to rest.”
Security operatives have cordoned off sections of the hospital as top government officials and political associates trooped to the facility to assess the situation and show support.
Repeated attempts to reach the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful.
However, medical personnel at FMC confirmed that Ewhrudjakpo is “receiving the best possible care” and is currently stable.
