World-renowned British heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday reportedly involved in a road traffic accident in Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m., just before Danco Filling Station, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis of the highway.
According to reports, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are yet to be fully ascertained.
Joshua was said to have sustained minor injuries in the crash, while two occupants of the vehicle reportedly died on the spot.
An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, who spoke at the scene, explained that the boxer was travelling in a two-vehicle convoy, consisting of a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV carrying his security detail.
“Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him, while a third person sat beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. The security detail was in the vehicle behind,” Orojo said.
He added that other eyewitnesses immediately commenced rescue efforts, flagging down motorists to assist before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene.
“Unfortunately, the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died on the spot,” he stated.
Following the incident, fans and supporters flooded social media with messages of concern, as authorities commenced investigations into the cause of the crash.
Efforts to obtain official updates from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) proved unsuccessful, as calls to the Commandant, Akinbiyi Babatunde, were not answered.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed awareness of the incident but said further details would be provided later.
“I have seen the videos too, but I will get back to you on it,” he said in a telephone conversation.
