World heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following the road accident that claimed the lives of two of his close associates along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025.

The Lagos and Ogun State governments, in a joint statement on Tuesday, confirmed that Joshua was discharged late in the afternoon after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.

The statement expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, describing their deaths as tragic and painful.

“We pray that Almighty God grants the repose of their souls and gives their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the governments said.

Despite his discharge, the statement noted that Joshua remains deeply heartbroken and emotionally affected by the loss of the two young men, who were described as his close friends.

It was also disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos earlier in the day to pay final respects to the deceased as preparations were made for their repatriation later in the evening.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed appreciation to Nigerians for the overwhelming show of concern, sympathy and support since the incident occurred.

The governors also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for what they described as his “fatherly support” throughout the period following the accident.
In addition, the governments commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality of care in attending to Joshua and others who sustained injuries in the crash.

The statement was jointly signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.
