A massive fire broke out on Sunday morning at the Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, spreading from an industrial facility to adjoining residential areas.
Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky as raging flames engulfed factory buildings within the industrial park.
Emergency responders were seen battling the inferno amid chaotic scenes, while residents of nearby communities fled their homes for safety.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm the cause of the fire, and no casualties or injuries had been officially reported.
However, residents told Vanguard that the fire started around dawn, allegedly triggered by a gas explosion at a foam-producing company located within the free trade zone. The blaze reportedly escalated rapidly, damaging several nearby houses before firefighters could bring it under control.
Confirming the incident, the Director of the Ogun State Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, told newsmen that firefighting teams were already on ground to contain the situation.
“The state firefighters from Agbara and Ota have been on the ground doing the needful for over three hours,” Adefala said in a brief telephone interview.
