The Federal Government has congratulated Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele for the record-breaking performance of her latest film, Behind the Scenes, at the box office.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Monday, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) described Akindele’s achievement as a major boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and a reflection of the growing global recognition of Nigerian storytelling.
According to the agency, Behind the Scenes has officially crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making it the first Nollywood film to surpass the ₦2 billion mark.
The film’s success extends beyond Nigeria, with over $111,256 earned in Canada and $190,249 across North America, highlighting Nollywood’s rising international profile. “From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas, this movie had everyone captivated,” the NOA statement said.
The agency also noted that Akindele has now become the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, a feat underscoring her influence and consistency in the industry.
The NOA said the record-breaking performance of Behind the Scenes demonstrates the expanding reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces the global appeal of Nollywood productions, calling the achievement a proud moment for the country’s cultural and creative sectors.
The government’s commendation comes amid widespread acclaim for the 2025 release, which has dominated local markets and strengthened Nollywood’s international footprint.
Earlier reports on January 12 confirmed that Akindele had cemented her place in African cinema history as Behind the Scenes crossed the ₦2 billion milestone, marking a historic moment for Nigerian filmmaking.
